Receipts for purchases made by Tilly Merrick of Deacon John White, 1798-1814.

Receipted bills, 1798-1814, for a variety of purchases, including paint, nails, and seed. The quantity purchased of some items suggests that Merrick bought them for resale in his own store. One receipt (dated 1806 Sept. 26) bears the signature of clerk John Thoreau for John White.

Tilly Merrick, storekeeper of Concord, Mass., was Treasurer of the Union Turnpike Corporation. He owned Union Turnpike shares No. 206-215. The Corporation was formed in 1804 to build a turnpike (a predecessor of Route 2) from Concord to Leominster, connecting the Cambridge and Concord Turnpike and the Fifth Massachusetts Turnpike. Deacon John White (b. Acton, Mass., 1749; d. Concord, Mass., 1830) kept store in Concord about 1773-1821. Around 1780, he bought and added onto the store building in Monument Square today used for the Colonial Inn. He prospered during the period from 1790 to about 1810.
